President Peter VK4SIR reports that over the last couple of months four candidates have been studying for their Foundation licence, and last Saturday the 13th sat their exam at the clubhouse. We wish them the best of luck and thank members for their tuition and supervising the exam. The club’s most recent social meeting which was held on the 8th November with a local councillor being the guest speaker. It was considered a big success with many members in attendance and lots of questions were asked and answered. Last Sunday the 14th of November 2021 Ipswich Wicen group assisted the Trail Runners Association of Queensland in the running of the Mount Glorious Trail Run by providing safety communications. To keep everything running smoothly one base station and four checkpoints were established and a portable repeater linked everything together. A total of 14 volunteered for the event. It was an early start for some as they had to leave home by 0400hrs. The event was a success, and the organisers were very happy with the professionalism of the Wicen team. Many thanks to the operators who assisted on the day. The club’s end of year Christmas get together will be held on Saturday the 27th of November at Kholo Gardens commencing at 10am and it’s a BYO food and drink event. Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan, VK4HIT. --------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I’m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I’ve been thinking. The augurers have been probing the metaphorical entrails of the sacrificial offerings and have decided that the great Caesar will be calling the people to an election in the next few months. It is hardly surprising when we see the smiling faces of the leaders suddenly finding money for funding things we never knew we needed and beaming into the lenses of the assembled media representatives that the cognoscenti, the all knowing, are nodding in agreement. So we have the opportunity to raise issues that would never claim a willing ear from the elected and the alternative candidates. What I am saying is that there are issues that concern us as users of the radio spectrum and as radio amateurs, in particular. To grab the tiger by the tail, what about the ever increasing levels of what is called “radio smog? That by product of the digital era that besets both the commercial user and we hobbyists that sets the level of grass on the waterfall display to ever higher levels, confuses our equipment in decodes and can be a threat to life and emergency service personnel. I know from personal experience that hash from non-compliant solar photovoltaic, PV, installations, cheap and improperly filtered switch mode power supplies in the suburban setting can take the easy edge of operating an amateur station. Apart from the collection of ferrites, the shack is now sporting a modern version of a noise cancelling antenna. The sale of this equipment is allowed because there is no policeman on the beat. We have electro-magnetic-compatability, EMC, rules and if we are lucky, it seems, an importer or manufacturer goes through a charade of certification, in most cases, it appears. How could all these noisy devices be sold, otherwise? Funnily we used to believe that we employed Customs Officers to ensure the level of non-approved materials coming through our borders were restricted. We have a regulator of all things electronic and electrical as applied to communications and, dare I say it, they would seem to be missing in action. As much as our political masters try and devolve responsibility from government by various stratagems, there is still the outlandish thing called a Constitution which allegedly sets out who should be responsible for what. To that end, I believe, our politicians need to not only be capable of kissing babies, handing out money in front of potential electors but also ensuring that we actually get what we signed up for and that is functional government. This may sound a bit harsh but if the pandemic and the shenanigans it has provoked are a guide, it is time for us to exercise the firm handshake (virtual of course) and the honest look in the face and use that well worn old cliché, “Hey mate, where the bloody hell are you? I’m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that’s what I think how about you? ------------------------------------------------------------* QNEWS SOCIALLY SPEAKING Due to the COVID-19 situation, please check these events' direct for up-to-date status information and even without Covid dates have an uncanny knack of being changed at last moment.
